Preaching Well
"A man preacheth that sermon only well unto others which preacheth itself in his own soul. And he that doth not feed on and thrive in the digestion of the food which he provides for others will scarce make it savoury unto them; yea, he knows not but the food he hath provided may be poison, unless he have really tasted of it himself. If the word do not dwell with power in us, it will not pass with power from us." - John Owen

This is a very good quote. John Owen is one that I want to read often. This is very good wisdom that we should all seek to implement into our lives and our sermon preparation.
Owen is great to read - lately I've perused his "The Spirit and the Church" (a Puritan Paperback.) However, just for full disclosure, I actually first came across the quote in Sinclair Ferguson's chapter on preaching to the heart in one of my favorite books: "Feed My Sheep". It's a great book with chapters by Mohler, Piper, MacArthur, and many others. Piper also used the quote in his bio of Owen.
I see, I read that book a few years ago. I have actually thought about reading it again lately. I probably should do that soon.
