Who Pastors Pastors?

I know, I know, it sounds funny to say (or write) - even redundant. But I'm asking a serious question. And I'm not thinking local church government, controversial apostolic authority, or denominational hierarchy here guys - just a real honest question.

Who should pastors go to when they need their souls to be pastored?

A few answers: (1) this is one of the many benefits of a plurality of pastors/elders. We shepherd each other. (2) We've got to have other pastors watching over us from outside the church. (3) some of the best pastoring of my soul has come from great books and sermons from other pastors, both living and dead.

I'd say first and foremost a hearty Amen to JC's first point. Second, I would stress the importance of young pastors (like us) finding older, wiser, more experienced pastors outside our church that we can go to for help. Having one is good, having a handful is even better. Since I don't have another elder at MHMBC, I can honestly say that having some older, more mature pastors to run to with questions and issues has been a tremendous boon for me.

Great thoughts. Plurality is especially helpful. Amazing how some of those dead pastors can still speak, isn't it JC?

You guys have any accountability outside of your own church? Someone who regularly asks you the hard questions about your ministry decisions and your own personal life?

If so, how has that impacted your life/ministry?

Echoing what everyone has said, I do have a few guys that I check in with from time to time. I speak with Justin N. often about different things pertaining to ministry and that greatly helps. However, I also have a couple more seasoned pastors I can talk with. They have often times been great resources/benefits for my ministry and my soul.

Dan,

The fellas that have been there for me have been available when I had issues or questions, and one in particular is excellent at asking searching questions that really help draw out heart issues. That said, I think a fellow elder would probably be the best to have actually doing the heart-accountability stuff, since he would see you on a more regular basis and have more opportunity to observe issues in behavior, speech, etc. Just my .02
