Would be interested in hearing your opinion on pastor's book allowances. What is a good amount to spend on books in a year?
To get the discussion going, here are some opinions:
C.J. Mahaney is an advocate for unlimited book allowances for pastors. He encourages churches to let their pastors buy as many books as desired.
Daniel Akin says that pastors should be spending about $2000 per year on books.

Book allowances are good. I have a small one here at the church (which is better than I've ever had!). However, I spent it in the first two months of the year. I think it is good to be able to buy as many books as is needed. A pastor should be continually reading and learning and growing. That takes money and it would benefit the church to spend it. I am not sure about the amount. $2,000.00 seems high, but it's probably not. If I totaled up what I've spent it may be close to that. Personally, I like Mahaney's opinion.
Brothers, be sure to listen to or watch the 13min talk by Piper to church-planters. Really, it is the ultimate answer concerning all our evangelism questions. We cannot build the church. We must rely on Christ.
While I certainly appreciate book allowances, quality should count over quantity. Also, if the church has to choose between money for the pastors' library and money for the church's library, I'd say buy quality books for the church's library (which the pastor can then use!).
I buy 2-4 books a month, and seldom have opportunity to fully read all of them in that amount of time (though of course, some are bought as reference books). I'd guess I spend around $1000 on books in a year. ($75-80 a month)
